Welcome To Layman's Corner
Here at Trinity we have been blessed to see God call
several men into the ministry. Layman's Corner will be the pulpit
for the continuance of the gospel. We will feature a different
preacher each week with a new word from the Lord and is our prayer
that you will be changed, challenged, and
cheered-up through God's Holy word!
Built To Last
2 Timothy 2:19-21
- Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
- But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.
- If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, [and] prepared unto every good work.
When I was a teenager, I used to go over to my friends house to play ping-pong. He had a brick basement, and we would play for hours at a time. One day, he hit a high shot and it gave me the perfect opportunity to "slam" the ball. I hit it as hard as I could and the ball bounced off the table and hit the brick wall. My joy soon turned into worry as I saw part of the wall break off. I walked over to the location of the impact, and on the floor lay a piece of what appeared to be brick. I picked it up only to find that it was actually a piece of plastic made to look like a brick on the outside that was glued to a piece of ply-wood. We then found out that with just a little prying, we could probably get all of the pieces off of the wall. What was made to look like it would last through the the trials of time and pressure, eventually couldn't withstand a ping-pong ball. We can apply this simple truth to our lives as Christians. What does it take for us as Christians to stand the tests of this world so we can serve God effectively?
- It Takes A Godly Foundation
- It Takes Genuine Faith
- It Takes Going Forward
The most important part any building is the foundation. A strong building built on a weak foundation will eventually fall. However, a weak building built on a strong foundation has a better chance of lasting. There are many unknowns in the Christian life, but one truth that remains is that "the foundation of God standeth sure". This gives me hope as a Christian knowing that it's not my foundation that I am relying on, but God's sure, strong, and steadfast foundation.
It takes genuine faith to build your life upon God's foundation. Once a builder starts building upon the foundation, he has to know that the foundation will last. Just because something looks good to the eye doesn't mean that it is genuine. Sooner or later, the fake things that looked good for awhile will show their weakness. Sometimes, we work as hard as we can to try to make it last, whether it's a relationship, a job, or even a church ministry. We might do alright for a while, but when the pressure comes, will our weakness be revealed, or will our foundation hold us up? By faith, we have to trust that God will give us the strength to purge ourselves of iniquity and become vessels of honor.
Removing the iniquity and dishonoring things from our life is a constant job. We can get so caught up with life that we fail to see the things that are weighing our spiritual life down. Verse 21 tells us what will happen if we purge ourselves of the dishonorable things in our lives. We shall be a vessel of honor, fit for the Master's use. The last part of Verse 21 says, "and prepared unto every good work". You can't be prepared if you're going backwards or even just doing enough to look like a good Christian. You have to know that you're life is built upon God's foundation, have the faith to remove the things that are weighing you down, and continue to build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ.
